Social Action

Project Green Ball was inspired by the French Tennis Federation’s Operation Balle Jaune. Operation Balle Jaune collects, grinds, creates and installs sports mats for use by persons with disabilities.  In each of the last 4 years the program has grown significantly.  This year the FFT expects to collect over 1.1 million balls and construct thirteen sports surfaces throughout France for kids in need.

In exchange for organizing the collection of the balls, Project Green Ball has arranged with manufacturers to donate a mutually agreed ball-based surface to a deserving organizations.

Riding Surfaces for Therapeutic Riding Programs

As our initial project is equestrian turf, our turf manufacturer partner, IGK Equestrian, has agreed that upon delivery of 200,000 balls to donate a ball-based equestrian turf to a therapeutic riding program servicing children with disabilities or suffering from life threatening diseases.

In late August 2014 we collected our 200,000th ball.  After discussion and evaluation of a number of therapeutic riding programs, we worked with IGK Equestrian to donate our  first riding surface to The Shared Living Collaborative (SLC) in Merrimac, Massachusetts. The SLC provides a variety of foster-care, in-home, day and residential services to children and adults with developmental disabilities primarily in the Merrimack Valley area. The SLC embraces principles of sustainability, social and environmental responsibility, and holds the belief that everyone, regardless of challenges encountered, can live a productive, bountiful, and fulfilled life embedded in the community and every facet of society.  The SLC strongly believes and incorporates principles and activities grounded in Eco Therapy such as Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Hippo Therapy, Equine Assisted Learning, and Carriage Driving.

In September 2015 an equestrian riding surface with over 100,000 dead balls was donated to The Shared Living Collaborative.  The new surface is pictured below:

Tennis Courts

In addition, we have partnered with Ace Surfaces to donate a tennis court surface with recycled tennis balls in the mat cushioning once we deliver 200,000 balls to the manufacturer.

If you want to participate in this program, please package up your balls and and send them to The Tennis Ball Project. Contributors pay the cost of the boxes for shipment and the Project pays the shipping fees. The info for shipment is available at http://tennisballcourts.com/how-and-where-to-recycle/.
